Obituary for Delbert Enoch Hanshew

Delbert E. Hanshew, 92, of Meadow Bridge, passed away Sunday, October 13, 2019, in the Peyton Hospice House, Lewisburg, following a long illness.

Born April 5, 1927, at Springdale, he was the son of the late Adam and Rheba Gill Hanshew.

Delbert was a miner and ran an independent coal company that employed many of the local men. He, also, was a heavy equipment operator with the mines. Delbert was a member of the Springdale Church of Christ. Being an avid wood worker, his work is found all across the country.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by 2 brothers Leonard and Harold Hanshew; and a foster daughter Tammy Patterson.

Survivors include his devoted wife Arlene Gill Hanshew; his son Robert (Gerry) of Millville; his daughter Jeanne Harrah (Danny) of Meadow Bridge; those he raised as his own Kathy Bailey (Keith) of Beckley and Peggy Sifers of Charlotte, North Carolina; 1 brother Melvin Hanshew of Springdale; 2 sisters Ada Sifers and Violet Cummings, both of Springdale; 6 grandchildren Heather Lea (Jacob) of Friendswood, Texas, Derek Harrah (Rachel) of San Leon, Texas, Justin Patterson (Kristen) of Covington, Virginia, Jordan Patterson of Frankford, West Virginia, Kerri Williams (Shawn) of Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia, and Kaylee Avila of Berea, Kentucky; 11 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

As he requested, there will be no services and his body was cremated.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations of sympathy be made to Peyton Hospice House, 1265 Maplewood Avenue, Lewisburg, WV 24901.
