Obituary for Richard "Doc" Cecil Neal

Richard “Doc” Cecil Neal, 81, of Rainelle, passed away Friday, January 17, 2020, in the Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, following a sudden illness.

Born April 6, 1938, in Rainelle, he was the son of the late Russell and Helen Bryant Neal.

Following his 1957 graduation from Rainelle High School, Doc proudly served in the United States Navy for 20 years active duty on the: USS Corry DDR-817; USS Tidewater AD-31; USS Claude V Ricketts DDG-5; USS Intrepid CVS-11; and the USS LaMoure County LST-1194 and 10 years in the Fleet Reserves. Upon his military retirement, he returned to Rainelle and taught welding at Greenbrier West High School, retiring in 2000. He was an avid fisherman; enjoyed hunting; loved baseball; and reading old western novels.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his beloved wife of almost 62 years, Betty Estep Neal; 4 brothers Jim, Harold “Fuzzy”, Howard “Smokie”, and Charles Neal; and 6 sisters Hila Marie, Kathleen, and Betty Neal, Bonnie Gilkeson, Ruth Shumaker, and Marjorie Sevy.

Survivors include 2 daughters Rita Wood (Steve) and Brenda McClung (Jeff), all of Rainelle; 4 grandchildren Lora Persinger (Shawn) of Cross Lanes, Jennifer Wood of Charleston, David Wood of Huntington, and Richard Dale McClung of Rainelle; 6 great-grandchildren Ayden, Sophie, Nora, Nicholas, Jude and Elliana; the Myers Family, Willie, Pat and Jason; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. The family wishes to thank special caregivers Rhonda Berry and Jessica Viars and The Villages at Greystone for the wonderful care and compassion extended while Doc was a resident.

Services will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday, January 23, at Smathers Funeral Chapel, with Allen McGuire officiating.

Burial will follow in the Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville with military honors by the Ronceverte American Legion.

Friends may call Wednesday, January 22, from 6 - 8 at the funeral home.
