Obituary for Virginia Ruth Ellis Thompson

Virginia Ruth Ellis Thompson, 90, of Roanoke, VA and formerly of Rainelle, WV died on February 8, 2019 after a long illness. She was born September 10, 1928 in Danville, WV. Virginia was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, James Edward Thompson in 2010 and their son, Rodney Edward Thompson in 1999.

Virginia is survived by her daughter Francine Virginia Thompson Burgess (Stephen), her son Kendall Alan Thompson; four grandchildren Michael Scott Burgess (Stephanie), James Webb Burgess (Emelyn), Alanna Kathleen Thompson and Kelsey Erin Thompson; and one great grandchild, Jamie Lyn Burgess.

Affectionally known and loved as Granny, she will be remembered and cherished as a loving caring Mom; always nurturing and guiding. Her home was always a welcome place of warmth and hospitality where she used her cooking skills to serve great comfort foods. Home and family were always a priority in Granny’s life.

Granny loved to decorate her home in country style. She discovered a passion for Tole painting and creating country style crafts. She and her husband operated Cottonwood Country Crafts, selling handcrafted items and craft supplies. Her friends and family continue to cherish her unique artwork.

In addition to being Mom, Granny, wife and friend, Virginia was always active in her Church and community. She was a long time member of the Rainelle United Methodist Church, serving faithfully in many leadership capacities and teaching Sunday School; truly an inspiration and example of service and commitment to Christ and the Church.

Virginia volunteered in the community, serving as Treasurer of the Community Improvement Association, helping establish a 30 bed clinic in Rainelle. She also served as PTA president and especially enjoyed reading to students in the classroom in her senior years.

She was active in all levels of Scouting through the Buckskin Council of the BSA, continuing in leadership long after her son, Kendall, became an Eagle Scout. Virginia was honored with the Silver Fawn Award by the Buckskin Council of the BSA in 1974. Virginia and Jim attended adult training at the Philmont Scout Ranch in 1975. In 1976 Virginia and her husband organized the first Buckskin Council Cub Scout Father and Son Bake-Off hosted at the Greenbrier Resort. She earned her Wood Badge Award in 1977. She was the heart and life of scouting in the Rainelle area for many years.

A Celebration of Death and Resurrection will be held at the Rainelle United Methodist Church in Rainelle, WV on February 12, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends at 1:00 p.m. prior to the service.

Our thanks to the staff and friends at Salem Terrace at Harrogate Memory Care and Gentle Shepherd Hospice for taking loving care of Granny. Your caring is greatly appreciated.
